    2.About the Author。
    3.Text-related In:formation
    1.Key to Excercises(Texts A,B&C),其中包括:Responding to the Text,Vocabu—lary,Writing三大类练习的答案。
    2.Key to Translation Exercises,

    2. Dysfunctions. Merton was critical of Parsons work to the extent that it madecrude and absolute assertions. Briefly put, Merton contests three fundamental ideasof structural-functionalism. The problem of functional utility. The postulate of uni-versal functionalism. The problem of indispensability. As a consequence of thesecriticisms Merton is a) claiming that not all social relations and institutions are func-tionally beneficial to 'social order' and b) it is only by empirical investigation that asociologist can determine the role of an institution in society not by grand theorisingalone !
    3. Middle-Range theories. Merton argued that sociologists might be better em-ployed designing and applying what he called middle-range theories. These theorieswould have as their central objective the analysis of empirical social reality. In thisaspect of his work Merton was clearly suggesting that the grand theorising of the'founding fathers' and his mentor, Talcott Parson's, was of limited value!
    4. The Sociology of Science. But when all said and done Robert Merton remainsa functionalist. This is demonstrated in his work on the 'scientific community'.Whilst this is a valued piece of work to the extent that it demonstrates the social, cul-tural and political basis of the community of scientists. Nonetheless the analysis isfirmly grounded in a functionalist analysis. Thus there is little in Merton's work onpower or social divisions.
