The Vikings lived in Europe about 1,000 years ago. They traveled in small ships and started new towns in many places. In A.D. 984, some Vikings went to live in Greenland, 994 miles (1,600 kilometers) from Europe. It was very cold, and there were no trees, so the Vikings brought all their wood from Europe. They started farms in Greenland, and became very wealthy. The crops were good for sheep and cows. Soon they had big stone houses and churches, and more than 5,000 people lived there. Every year, a ship came from Europe with useful tools and clothes for them.
Then a disease called the Black Death came to Europe in 1349, and millions of people died there. The ships to Greenland stopped. In 1721, a ship went to Greenland to search for the Vikings, but all the towns were empty. There were no people, and no records of what happened. Today, scientists study the Greenland Vikings to try to solve the mystery. They know that the weather got colder at that time. But what happened to all the people? Did they all die? Did they go to another island? We still don't understand the reason why they disappeared.
