Before the teds and rock'n'roll's arrival in 1953, a section of middle-class youth —— thebeats —— were already indicating their disaffection with post-war society. Rather than havingdeprivation and poverty imposed on them, the beats voluntarily chose a life of poverty byrefusing to work regularly. The freedom that was gained represented a protest against theincreasing technological and bureaucratic ordering and impersonality of social life. Retreatismand disengagement were the first step in recovering a lost humanism on which a new socialorder could be based. Although the movement was predominantly American, the visualsymbols of beat were exported to Britain. Jazz, poetry and marijuana were its hallmarks. Beatphilosophy was chiefly characterised by an extreme pessimism about the future and thepossibilities of progress. They aspired for freedom and the anguish of being alone, undecidedand separate. But the central ideology of the beats did not gain wide popularity in Britain until1966, when it was further developed with the coming of the hippies.
