In 1209,several hundred students and scholars arrived in Cambridge from Oxford. They were allchurchmen and had been studying in Oxford. It was a hard life at Oxford'for there was constanttrouble, even fighting, between the townsfolk and the students. Then one day a student acciden-tally killed a man ofthe town. The Mayor arrested him, along with three other students who wereinnocent, and by order ofKing John （who was quarrelling with the Church） they were hanged. In protest, many students left Oxford, some conung to Cambridge; and so the new Universitybegan.
