From the table we can see that while a paragraph is a unit of writing composed of several sentences, a composition is a unit of writing consisting of several paragraphs combined together to express one central idea. In this sense, we can say that a composition is a self-contained piece of writing.
In order to make a composition complete in itself, a good thesis statement is of utmost impqrtance. A thesis statement functions within a composition in almost exactly the same way a topic sentence functions in a paragraph. It announces the writer's purpose or opinion in the composition, and serves as a guidepost for both the reader and the writer.
The development of the thesis Statement calls for unity and coherence in the composition. Here, unity refers to the selection of appropriate and relevant details or facts for inclusion to support the thesis statement. Next to unity, the most important quality of the composition is coherence, which literally means the ability to "stick together. " For not only should every paragraph in the composition discuss the same thesis statement, or different aspects of the thesis statement, but each paragraph should also connect smoothly to the preceding paragraph and the following one. Coherence is achieved by various means, some of which will be covered in this unit.
